Rango the Video Game Preview

In March, Nickelodeon and Paramount will release the latest project from Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski. An animated film about a chameleon with an identity crisis, Rango features the voice of Johnny Depp and the beautiful art of Industrial Light and Magic. I recently got a sneak peek at Rango: The Video Game, which will be shipping out alongside the movie, and it's visually stunning to say the least.

Though the three levels I was shown were pre-alpha, Rango looks fairly polished, thanks in part to the fact that it's already been in development for more than a year, a rare occurrence for a movie-based game. Another reason Rango looks so great is that all of the character assets have been made by ILM, themselves, rather than a developer's best stab at a copy. This not only gives Rango a very cinematic look, but also frees up the developer to spend more time on gameplay.

Instead of regurgitating the exact chain of events from the movie, the developers have chosen to feature Rango's "Tall Tales" as the centerpiece of the gameplay. In the film, Rango convinces those around him of his greatness by telling a number of stories, and these are the inspiration for the game. Besides providing different backdrops, these stories also lend themselves to different types of gameplay, and the developers said no two levels will play exactly the same.

During my brief demo, I saw basic third-person shooter gameplay in a Wild West environment, a golf game involving zombies, and an action game set inside a video game complete with pixilated enemies. I didn't actually get to play the game, so I can't say anything about how the gameplay feels, but it certainly looks beautiful, and that's a good start.

Rango will be available for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, and DS in March.

This is the second reveal of an Uncharted game that I've covered in my time at IGN, and the same thing has happened each time: I go in thinking Naughty Dog is a great developer but that this next iteration will just be some tweak or graphical improvement -- that the game will be better than the last, but not leave me feeling weak in the knees. Then, I see the game, my expectations are far exceeded, and I'm left to try and put it all into words for you.

Yes, Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception looks phenomenal. By now, you've probably seen the game's trailer, heard that it was all made in the game's engine, and replayed the short gameplay bits at the very end of the video a few times. But even better than that is the fact that Sony's given us two straight minutes of footage -- which encompasses just a sliver of what I saw in a recent demo -- that we're happy to reveal today.

Two minutes of Uncharted 3 footage.
However, before you start replaying that over and over, let's run through just what's going on in Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. This, of course, is the sequel to IGN's Game of the Year 2009, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Naughty Dog likes to keep the timeline a bit fluid, but a year or so has passed since Nathan Drake took down Lazarevic. Now, Drake and his best friend and mentor, Victor "Sully" Sullivan, are on the quest for "the Atlantis of the Sands," a fabled city filled with the wealth of Arabia and hidden somewhere in the inhospitable Rub al-Khali Desert.

To get there, Nate and Sully are going to need to do the proper amount of globe hopping. Although many of you freaked out when you saw Nathan Drake wandering through the desert ("There's nowhere to platform in the desert! What the hell, Naughty Dog?!"), the devs say that only about half or possibly less than that is actually set in the sands. Just like Shangri-La in Uncharted 2, the fabled city is the end goal, and there's going to be a whole lot in our duo's way.

See, there's a "clandestine order" that's trying to keep our buddies from reaching the mystical city, and they've got an evil leader that "threatens to conjure [Nathan Drake's] deepest fears." Sadly, this order and its leader didn't make an appearance in my demo, but the fact that we're talking about conjuring stuff up makes me wonder if nightmares or hallucinations will be the over-the-top twist Nate has to face (and that the Uncharted games are known for) this time around.

Don't expect every level to be sandy.Don't expect every level to be sandy.Still, that's all conjecture (and if that's what you're into, check out this Rewind Theater breaking down all the clues from the debut trailer). What I know for certain is that this order has the capital to hire thugs to try and kill Nate and Sully, and that's exactly what's happening in the demo I saw. The boys are at a chateau in France. It seems that Sir Francis Drake -- Nate's ancestor and plot point of the original game -- actually had a bit of a run in with the Atlantis of the Sands back in the day while sailing around the world and investigating trade routes for Queen Elizabeth.

Anyway, there's a clue in this chateau, and as the guys search for it or get done searching for it, the bad guys show up and start pouring gasoline all over the place. They're going to burn the place down so our heroes can't find it, but apparently they don't know Nate and Sully are actually there. How do I know this? Well, I don't actually, but the guys tossing gas everywhere didn't seem to be looking for Nate and Sully.

I wasn't quite sure what to make of Back to the Future: The Game. On the one hand, I was psyched to see one of favorite franchises come back to video games. On the other hand, what the hell was developer Telltale Games thinking? Back to the Future III had a conclusive ending: DeLorean done, Doc happy, future safe. Was this game going to be another insult to the Marty McFly legacy like the short-lived cartoon that had the DeLorean back for no reason and Marty hanging out with Doc's kids?

The short answer is no. After seeing the first section of the game -- the setup to the five episodes that are about to rock the PC and PlayStation 3 -- I'm happy to report that it looks like Telltale Games has nailed this beloved universe and is set to give fans like me something very special.

Biff is back.
If you've missed our week of debut videos here on IGN, Back to the Future: The Game is a true follow-up to the film trilogy. An adventure game, it has you moving Marty McFly around the world, interacting with objects and using them to solve puzzles and problems -- oh, and you're traveling through time and dealing with the characters you know and love from the movies.

I don't want to spoil the setup of the game, but it begins with living out a very familiar scene from the first movie. Some sound effects were missing in the preview I was watching (sadly, I didn't get to play myself), but it still looked and felt like the scene I knew. Doc says some things, and you get to pick what Marty retorts with from a list of three. You can pick the line from the movie or you can deviate and begin to change what we all know. It was a weird thing to choose the wrong line and watch Doc respond like the real line had been said, but when this wraps up, you understand why things go off the rails.

Anyway, after all that, the year is 1986 and we're months removed from Doc and Clara saying goodbye to Marty and riding their steam time train into space. Marty wakes in his bed to the familiar tunes of Huey Lewis and the News and sets off to meet his dad at Doc's house. See, the city's moved in on Emmett's abandoned house, and today's the estate sale.

For a Back to the Future nerd like myself, stepping into Doc's house was a pretty awesome experience. Telltale has replicated the laboratory from the wall of clocks to the giant amp and packed the place with trinkets film buffs will recognize. There's the model of the area around the clock tower and Biff's walking around with a beer while wearing the failed telepathy machine Doc was rocking in 1955.

That TLC applied to the environment is also applied to the characters. I'm sure you've seen how good Marty looks and heard how much the soundalike nails Michael J. Fox, but George McFly and Biff look like perfectly cartoon-erized versions of their actor counterparts. George is in his blazer from that last set of scenes from the first movie and Biff is in that ugly track suit, too.

Marty has a conversation with his dad to and try to talk him out of selling all of Doc's stuff, but George won't have it. Defeated, Marty starts looking around the lab for anything that could be dangerous in the wrong hands. From the back of the clock tower model, Marty sees Doc's notebook -- filled with time travel diagrams and info -- poking out. Before our hero can grab it, Biff does, and despite Marty's slick talk, the butthead refuses to give it up.

After trying a few different tactics to get the big guy to drop it, Marty goes to his dad, grabs his guitar and hooks it up to the amp. If you couldn't figure out what to do after getting denied by Biff or just aren't familiar with how exploring/problem solving works in an adventure game, Back to the Future: The Game has a built-in hint system you can always click on to get a nudge in the right direction. After seeing Marty grab the guitar, Biff rushes over and wants to play. After a brief exchange, Marty lets him and the amp blows the villain over so Marty can nab the notebook.

About this time, the familiar DeLorean time travel noise happens from outside, Marty rushes out, and he finds Einstein the dog in the car. There's a recorded message from Doc stating that if Emmett's ever in trouble, the car had been programmed to return to this spot and get Marty.

This is heavy, Doc.This is heavy, Doc.Doc's in trouble in time, you're the only hope, and that's where my demo ended.

I realize I might have come off as gushing or whatever in this preview, but I'm really floored at how Telltale nailed the Back to the Future universe from what I saw. It was really cool to see Marty have a conversation with his dad and be a kid who respects his old man -- that's not something we ever saw in the movies, and it immediately showed that Telltale's expanding the characters we love in a very interesting way. Frankly, next week can't get here fast enough for me to jump into the first episode. From there, new installments will come on a somewhat monthly basis, but it looks like PC will always have the jump on its PS3 counterpart.
