View all 3 videos » THQ's colorful Wii platformer de Blob was one of the highlights of last year. It was funny, exciting, and creative. We were disappointed that it didn't do better. So it's a pleasant surprise to hear that the developer Blue Tongue is going ahead with de Blob 2, making it bigger and better looking.
For those of you that never played the first game, de Blob is a wacky, original game about repainting everything in sight. Players control a blob, named Blob, who can soak up color. That color can be used to paint buildings, streets, plants, and other blobs. This comes in handy because the entire world has gone all greyscale thanks to the evil Comrade Black who is draining the color from the world. The sequel keeps these principles, and main villain, but spreads it out to a wider area with larger stakes.
De Blob 2 takes players to over 10 areas, each with its own missions. Every area starts off grey and drab, until Blob spruces it up. By jumping into pools of color, or picking up powerups, Blob can turn himself into a living paint sponge. Jumping against a building will splatter it with paint, transforming it into a vibrant structure full of life.

The game looks gorgeous, and not in that "oh it's nice for a Wii game" kind of way. It's just a really pretty game with a great art style. The cutscenes are very cinematic and lively, and the game itself is a kaleidoscope of color. The music that we've heard so far is great too. As each area gets painted, the music builds, becoming more lively and complex. It's gradual so you don't really notice, but by the time the level is done the game is jamming.
THQ also says the PS3 version will be in 3D, which could look really awesome in a game like this. We're tentatively excited about that feature.
Blue Tongue has made a few changes to the game, which help with its spread to other consoles. Waggle moves have nearly entirely been removed. Whereas before shaking the Wii remote was the jump mechanic, it's now a simple A button push. This became a much bigger deal when THQ showed off the new sidescrolling platformer levels.
Each zone has multiple missions inside larger buildings around the area. Blob gets into the buildings (usually by having to be a certain color), and from there the game switches to sidescrolling mode. Blob rolls around, attacking enemies (by locking on, then jumping on them) and flipping switches. It's more puzzle than action, though the levels are full of plenty of bad guys to splat. There are walls that take a considerable amount of paint to break through, and switches that require a certain color to open. A lot of the game is about finding that right powerup or color pool, then having the skill to keep that color when you need it.
One of the best parts of the previous game was the humor, and we're glad to inform you that de Blob 2 is just as funny. While technically the game is a family friendly title, the humor is clearly aimed for adults as well as kids. The University level is a prime example of that. Student protesters and jokes about silly classes are not things young kids are likely to get, and it was kind of surprising to see one of the cute blob college students put a flower into the barrel of a bad guy's gun (we can laugh about Kent State now, right? Because I did.).
De Blob 2 is looking great, and it's cool that the game is coming out for all the consoles this time. Everyone that missed the original game gets a second chance to experience it.
